I am Will. After living in the Seattle area for 15 years I’ve quit my job at the Disney Internet Group, sold my home on Bainbridge Island, packed up my family (wife, daughter and three cats) and moved them to a small town in Iowa. Having downsized space and expenses, I’m attempting to reinvent the way I work and play. I’m now partner and CTO of ScribeStorm Interactive Media Technologies, and with a three minute commute, I now spend more time at home enjoying my family and remodeling a small ranch home.

And I am Dawn. After living in the Seattle area for 14 years I have returned to where I grew up, Iowa. I live in Fairfield, Iowa with my husband (above) and four year old daughter. I know I am an Iowan, but I also feel like a Seattleite (it’s been said that you only have to live in Seattle 10 years before you can claim that!). It’s strange to be in such a small town but at the same time it feels comforting and right.

Hi Will! Welcome to Fairfield! Love your blog and have bookmarked it. I haven’t yet combed through it enough to acertain whether you moved to Fairfield for MUM-related reasons, or for other reasons. If it’s the latter, may I ask you a couple questions? I’m compiling my own informal “study” of why people move to FF who aren’t drawn by MUM.

Welcome to Fairfield! I’d enjoy hearing about some of your experiences here. It is such a difference from the LA area!

I was just at the beach in Santa Monica! We were staying in Burbank and the heat was oppressive. I couldn’t believe how much cooler it was at the beach. It was also quite a trip for me to see miles and miles of beach. I’d been to LA twice but for some reason never went to the beach before. I’m glad I did this time.

I am interviewing for a job in Fairfield. It would be a relo from Denver. I’m in a very similar space to you, Willi, and in fact, my wife and I have had Seattle as a prospective top relo choice.

Now that you’ve been in Fairfield for a while, can I ask your overall impression? I’m actually coming in to town on 11/4 in the early evening and will spend the day interviewing, etc on 11/5.
